After a week off to celebrate Independence Day. Ijams' Outdoor Adventure Camp welcomed a new group of campers. Most were from the Halls-Powell Boys & Girls Club.
Every week it's a new group of up to 20 kids. Most have never been to a summer camp and have no idea what to expect. Most are excited; some pretty nervous. But, it's our hope that all leave refreshed after a week of fun and adventure.
For many of the urban youth, lakes, creeks and mountain climbing are just something you see on TV.
Every week the activity schedule is consistent, each day different. Outdoor Adventure Camp is held outside, yet we always keep an eye on doppler radar, so we can dodge the showers.
This is a new program for Ijams and it's all made possible with the help of these generous partners:
• West Knoxville Sertoma Club
• Boys and Girls Club of the Tennessee Valley
• Grassroots Outdoor Alliance
• Horny Toad Activewear
• Pelican International
• River Sports Outfitters
Additional food and funding provided by:
• South Knoxville Alliance
Ijams offers camp scholarships for kids in traditionally under-served communities. After the first four weeks we've seen kids from Walter P. Taylor, Western Heights, Middlebrook, North Ridge Crossing and Haslam Boys and Girls Clubs.
