Bat Night brings out bat-aficionados of all sizes

Ijams celebrated all things bat last Saturday night.

After an indoor program, senior naturalist Peg Beute led the group of bat-aficionados on a walk around the grounds. Some in attendance wore their colorful bat masks and sported listening devices to better locate the vesper bats that begin to forage for small flying insects (including mosquitoes) at twilight.

The eager young eyes spotted several of the winged-mammals flying around the meadow. From bat censuses past, our best guess is they were either little brown or big brown bats, two very common species at Ijams and across the state.
